Our much-loved Sabar dance class with Mbaye Art is back – with live drumming by Ngondame & Lars! This will be an 7-week course running from October 19th to November 30th.
Sabar is an energetic and expressive dance filled with humor, rhythm, and play.
Mbaye Art is a dancer, choreographer, and percussionist from Dakar, Senegal. He is trained in traditional Senegalese dances such as Sabar and Djembe, as well as modern dance, ballet, jazz, and dance pedagogy. With years of experience teaching both Senegalese and international dancers, Mbaye brings not only technical skill but also infectious energy, warmth, and joy to every class.

ABOUT SABAR
Sabar is a traditional West African dance and drumming style originating from the Wolof people of Senegal. It is both a musical genre and a dance form, deeply rooted in Senegalese culture and society. Sabar is performed at celebrations, weddings, naming ceremonies, and social gatherings, and it remains an essential part of Senegalese identity.
The dance is expressive, filled with humor, attitude, and storytelling. It is known for its explosive energy, high knee lifts, quick footwork, and powerful full-body movements. The dancer responds directly to the rhythms of live sabar drums. This dialogue between drummer and dancer is central – it is improvised, rhythmic, and demands musicality and quick reaction.

Mbaye Art is a dancer, choreographer, and percussionist from Dakar, Senegal. He has completed formal dance training in traditional Senegalese dances such as Sabar and Djembe, as well as in modern dance, ballet, jazz, and dance pedagogy. Mbaye has extensive experience teaching both Senegalese and international dancers, bringing vibrant energy and a positive spirit to his classes.
